Math B4 Bed

What do you notice?
  • B4 Bed Thoughts: *Let everyone see the image. Discuss: “What do you notice?”
  • Next: Ask: What do you not know?”
  • Next: Discuss each word problem following these steps in the process. Step 1: read together. Step 2: Discuss if this is an addition/subtraction/multiplication/division problem (use the following slide for terms). Step 3: Re-Read the word problem looking for the necessary numbers that could fit into a mathematical formula (a+b=c/a-b=c, etc).
  • Materials: pass out paper and pencils or have them use the back of their learning journals for math thoughts). *Remind them to use a new page, add today’s date, and a title for the learning image. *Encourage the younger family members to draw what they think the answer might be.
  • Show us…put your reasoning to the test: Older learners can pick 3 of the word problems to practice on their own. Younger learners can do one problem with you. Or you might choose working these problems as a family unit. Have them draft their solutions in their learning journals. Today’s goal is to use the list of mathematical terms as a tool for reading the word problems. *Most learners do not enjoy “word problems” because they don’t know how to get started. Usually, the getting started and knowing which numerical pieces are placed into a math formula is the most important step.
  • Finally: Ask each member to share what they believe an equation and solution might be. Review what an active listener looks like.
