Today’s reading investigation: Arctic Animals = What do we know?
Family Sharing: *Invite everyone to share. Discuss which Arctic animal, each family member would choose, to research this week?
Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons
Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
Guided enquiry: invite them to write down the name of their Arctic animal. Encourage them to write of list of “I Wonders…” about their animal.
Next: Allow everyone 10-15 minutes to put their thoughts on paper about
Skill Discussion: “Let’s share what you’ve penned!” Encourage everyone to share… including your youngest. Spend a few moments sharing how you made animal research choices when you were their age. Which animal became your favorite?
Journal prep:*Before you pick up their Arctic animal books from the library. Take a moment to have them fold their journal page into thirds. Include the K-W-L headings. They should list, bulleted, facts under the K and the W columns. Once they have their animal books from the library, ask them to spend time reading about their animal. Finally, they would add 3, bulleted, facts that they’ve learned under the L column.
Discussion Wrap-Up:“Let’s check for some books about these animals on the Ft. Vancouver Library site. We can place a hold for pick-up at our Yacolt Library.” FVRL link
