Literary Foundations: Adlib Word Choice

One Night a Week… One Family… One Read Aloud… Priceless!

Just for today… an adlib family writing prompt!
  • Making the family connection: Discuss: Today’s writing activity will be an oral retelling!
  • Guided Retelling: Retelling is a strategy that is used to determine how well a student has comprehended a specific story. An ad-lib, is an activity in which comprehension of the written word allows learners to fill in the gaps of a story with various linking terms (nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc.).
  • Today’s literary connection: Invite everyone to gather at your kitchen table. Retelling of a Lego story. “Today, let’s have fun retelling this Lego story.” Invite someone to be the narrator (reader) and when there is a blank allow someone else to add a word of their choice (just like dealing a deck of cards… continue filling in the blanks around the table until the ad-lib has ended).
