Literary Foundations: Did you know this… about Mother’s Day?

One Night a Week… One Family… One Read Aloud… Priceless!

What do you know?
What could you plan for Sunday?
  • Making the family connection: Discuss: What do you know about Mother’s Day and why it is celebrated each year?
  • Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons
  • Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
  • Today’s literary connection: The history of Mother’s Day. Guided enquiry: Share the slide above. Invite them to take notes in their learning journal.
  • Next: Ask them to plan a Mother’s Day Tea for your back yard! What would it look like?; What tea sandwiches might they prepare?; What drink (tea, juice, etc) would they want to serve?; Would they pick some flowers or make paper ones?; If it rained, how would they create an indoor tea party?
  • Just for today… Mom… let them put their ideas on paper without asking them to share! Remind: Sketch what the tea party looks like. Invite someone to help your youngest learners.
  • *May a tea party bring you moments of joy… remember… to be surprised!
