Making the family connection: Discuss: “What was your favorite book that you have read this summer?”
Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons
them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
Today’s literary connection: “What is your favorite summer reading memory?”
Guided enquiry:First discuss everyone’s favorite summer reading memories. “Today you will be drafting a letter in your journal. Let’s discuss “who” your letter might be written to.” *It could be their best friend, a grandparent, someone who has moved away, or it could be to their journal… many writers have named their journal!
Next: Using the slide below, guide them in writing today’s date; the name of the person/journal that they are writing to (include an address if they decide to mail a final draft; then their introduction paragraph.
Finally: Guide them with proof-reading their spelling, their sentence fluency (does it make sense), as well including the title of the book and author’s name. Encourage them to sketch/doodle their favorite part of the book. *If they have not completed the book, invite them to make a prediction about the ending of the book.
