Why is literacy important? Learners need literacy in order to engage with the written word in everyday life… Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively, and understand the issues that are shaping our world.
- Story Mapping Strategy: This strategy helps a reader’s comprehension. While using a story map, reader’s learn how to organize the key elements from the story. They identify the characters and/or character traits, the plot, and the main settings. When reader’s process the story, they learn to identify the story’s problem/solution connection while they sort through and place, key details, into a brief sequence of events (B-M-E).
- Family literary connections: Ask: “ What was the story about?” Discuss: “Who was in the story?” Encourage them to re-tell the story. Guide them with clarifying questions: “Tell me more.” “Would that be a supportive detail or a sequencing detail?”
