- Gathering materials: family learning journals, pencils, colored pencils, and crayons
- Reading and Writing Connection: Creative Writing
- Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
- Creative Writing: Today’s topic… Once everyone has looked at the various hats in the slide above, ask them to pick one or two of the styles to write about. * Ask them to draw the brainstorming web into their journals. Have them create a sketch of the hat in the center of their page.

- Drafting responses: Creative drafting: Remind them to be creative, share imaginative adjectives that they could use to describe the hat of their choice. *When using a web, the top left bubble is the beginning with the top right bubble as the end. Allow each family member to write their thoughts (10 min). Encourage the youngest members to draw their thoughts and assign someone to be their scribe.
- Finally: Discuss: Let each family member share their “Hat-tic“ creation. Remind them that respectful listeners make eye contact with the person sharing without interrupting.
- Those that get done early… ask them to illustrate the final scene of the hat’s new use.
