- Gathering materials: family learning journals, pencils, colored pencils, crayons.
- Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
- Putting Your Thoughts on Paper: Let’s begin with a quick vocabulary practice! Use the slide above to guide each family member in spelling the above terms.

- Reading and Writing Connection: Thanksgiving is about family, memories, and fun. Use the “tale” template to write a family tale. Before you begin share a Thanksgiving story from your childhood. *Older learners can write their own tale, while the younger ones create a collaborative tale (guide and scribe the tale in one of their journals).
- Drafting responses: Allow each family member to write their thoughts (10 min). Encourage the youngest members to draw their thoughts and assign someone to be their scribe.
- Finally: Discuss: Let each family member share their “Thanksgiving Tale” creation. Remind them that respectful listeners make eye contact with the person sharing without interrupting.
- Those that get done early… ask them to illustrate a scene for their tale.
