Inking Thoughts: December’s Writing Calendar

  • Putting Your Thoughts on Paper: Everyday writing helps every learner in so many ways. During this holiday season, your family can create beautiful pages of memories, hopes, and a treasury of 2022 “captured moments.” Penmanship… Seasonal Spelling… Paragraphing… Punctuation… Creative designs! All will be captured in their individual learning journals.
  • Gathering materials: family learning journals, pencils, colored pencils, crayons
  • Reading and Writing Connection: *Inspiration can be found in any Christmas/Holiday picture book. Invite them to take a closer look in a book for examples of phrases and word choice that they could use in their daily writing. Every author is a word collector, they have their own system of “weaving” their stories with words and phrases they’ve jotted down in a journal. Any book at hand is an example for paragraph formation, proper punctuation, and spelling. Have fun with language while drafting these written creations!
  • Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
  •  Drafting responses: Allow each family member to write their thoughts (10 min). Encourage the youngest members to draw their thoughts and assign someone to be their scribe and/or guide their simple sentences!
  • Finally: Discuss: Let each family member share their “daily “ creation. Remind them that respectful listeners make eye contact with the person sharing without interrupting.
  • Those that get done early… ask them to illustrate a scene from their book.
