Nonfiction reading is a great source of graphs, diagrams, tables, charts, etc. Visual literacy is an an important skill for your students to have, especially in science and math.
Critical reading is a skill in which the reader is engaged with the resource to gain new information, to explore new techniques, and/or to discover the steps in a process. Readers will predict, question, and re-read while they are engaged with the text/passage.
Making the family connection: Discuss: “What do you know about these Arctic animals?”
Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons. Remindthem to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
Today’s literary connection: subject. Guided enquiry:“Which animal would you like to learn more about?”
