Making the family connection: Discuss: “Lil’ Quin’s Wintery Day”
Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons. Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
Today’s literary connection: subject. Guided drafting: Begin as a family rolling one die to create their Snowman scene (top 1/4th of their journal page).
Next:“Today’s literary story is one that you will draft. Your story includes a beginning – middle – and end. The main character is Lil’ Quin (penguin). The setting is a wintery day. The story line begins with Lil’ Quin adventuring outside into the snow. You will decide if Lil’ Quin finds or makes the snowman. Consider which part of the story the snowman will be included. “
Remind them to use the descriptive word list (spelling check up).
Guide their B-M-E paragraphs (4-6 sentences), encourage descriptive language, as well as what would an adventurous day look like for Lil’ Quin.*The youngest learners can illustrate Lil’ Quins story by folding their page into thirds (B-M-E). Invite one of the older students to scribe the B-M-E sentences once the story is illustrated and colored.
Drafting: Allow 15-20 minutes for drafting. If they feel their story is complete, ask them to complete their snowman illustration by adding details (Lil’ Quin, trees, birds, color, etc).
Story Time Extension: After dinner tonight, have a family story time!
