- Today’s reading investigation: Polar Wildlife
- Family Sharing: Share the information from the slide above. Discuss the “Guiding Non-Fiction Discussion” points. *Invite everyone to share which discussion point they would like to practice for today’s Polar Wildlife investigation. Invite them to list the discussion point in their learning journal.
- Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons. Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
- Guided enquiry: *Prepare downloading the Beyond Penguins and Polar Bear link and/or free texts: link *Text only: A pdf file that includes only the text and a glossary. This prints as an 8.5″ by 11″ handout and is 2-4 pages in length. Illustrated book: A full-color pdf file that can be printed, cut, and folded to form a 2 1/8″ by 2 3/4″ book (directions below). Each book contains color photographs and illustrations; some books contain activity pages. Electronic book: Onscreen version of the book contains recorded narration that lets students listen to the story as they read along on the screen. Many of the e-books have highlighted vocabulary words so that students can hear definitions with a single click. The e-books are available in Articulate version.
- Next: Allow everyone 10-15 minutes to silent read and take notes about either their new discoveries and/or their “I Wonders” that they could investigate further.
- Skill Discussion: “Let’s share what you’ve penned!” Encourage everyone to share… including your youngest. Spend a few moments sharing how you made choices when you were their age.
- Discussion Wrap-Up: “Now that you’ve used this website, how would you rate the site for interesting research?” (1=not good; 3=good, but needed more facts; 5=would like to use again)
