Family Sharing: Discuss what they know about Groundhog’s Day and/or Punxsutawney Phil. *Invite everyone to share.
Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons. Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
Guided enquiry:*Read the questions from the slide above. Invite a discussion while they draft their answers. Encourage them to draft complete sentences (Groundhogs are…; Groundhogs dig…; Groundhogs are excellent…; etc.).Allow everyone 10-15 minutes to put their thoughts on paper.
Next: Using the video link listed under the slide above, watch the video. Guide: “While we are watching this video, listen for new facts about groundhogs and/or groundhog’s day that you didn’t already know.” *Pause the video when someone would like to jot their new discoveries down in their journal.
Skill Discussion: “Let’s share what new information you’ve penned!” Encourage everyone to share… including your youngest.
