- Gathering materials: family learning journals, pencils, colored pencils, crayons. Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
- Reading and Writing Connection: Creative writing provides opportunities to learn from examples and re-create from an individualized perspective.
- Drafting responses: First: use the link above and choose one of the author’s videos. Next: Guide your learners to draw as they listen to the story. Then: Watch the video together. Allow each family member to illustrate their thoughts. Encourage the youngest members to draw their thoughts and assign someone to be their scribe (listing the authors name, the book’s title, and why they created their illustration).
- Finally: Discuss: Let each family member share their “Read Along-Draw Along“ creation. Remind them that respectful listeners make eye contact with the person sharing without interrupting.
