
- Today’s reading investigation: Making a reading choice?
- Family Sharing: “What do you think the Hank Zipzer book will be about?”; “How do you know?”; “What clues do you see on the book’s cover?” *Invite everyone to share.
- Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons
- Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
- Guided enquiry: “Today you will read about the Hank Zipzer book.” *Guide them to think about their prediction and how it does/doesn’t match the book’s synopsis.
- Invite them to read and draft their responses: “Now that you’ve gained a better insight from the book’s synopsis, would this be a great book choice for you?”; “Why or why not?”
- Next: Allow everyone 10-15 minutes to put their thoughts on paper. *Read the Snowball Soiree to the younger readers. Invite them draw the synopsis for their story.
- Book Extension: Encourage them to draft the ending to the book. “Did they get home before Baby Zipzer is born?”
- Skill Discussion: “Let’s share what you’ve penned!” Encourage everyone to share… including your youngest. Spend a few moments sharing how you make book choices).
