Kitchen Math: 2-D Shapes

What do you notice?
  • Today’s kitchen math discussion: “What do you notice?”
  • Next Inquiry: “What don’t you know?”
  • Investigation: Materials: marshmallows and toothpicks, paper/pencils/colored pencils/crayons or family learning journals (back of journal). Remind them to turn to the next available page and date it. Ask them to write the name for today’s kitchen math.
  • Inquire: “How would you re-create these shapes?”;  “What if you connected them using more toothpicks?”;   “What shape did you get?” *Let them have 5-6 minutes to draft their thoughts (without talking). *Remind them to include a sketch of the final shape. When they are finished, have them share how they came to their conclusions.
  • Kitchen Lab: Discuss: “What if you made a 3D with three more squares and the final shape from the slide above?” *Invite them to investigate their solutions: “Let’s investigate!”
