Reading and Writing Connection:Book Hooks… How an author keeps your reading…
A good “hook” in a book is one that can entice the reader to continue reading. A hook can be an intriguing line or statement comprising the key elements of the book.An author’s “hooks” are used within the first paragraph of the story, during the heightened action scenes, and at the end of chapters. These “hooks” provide powerful intrigue to attract readers and leave them wanting to know more... to turn the page!
Drafting responses: For today’s writing, read and discussthe book hooks from the above slide. Ask: “What makes that hook… work?”; “Would you want to read that book?”; “Why?” Next: Ask them to re-write the book hook that they liked in their journal, including the title of the book and the author’s name. Then ask them to write why they liked the book hook and why they would want to read the book. Allow each family member to write their thoughts (10 min). Encourage the youngest members to draw their thoughts and assign someone to be their scribe.
Finally: Discuss: Let each family member share their “ book hook “ thoughts. Remind them that respectful listeners make eye contact with the person sharing without interrupting.
Book Hook extension: Ask: “What is the book hook from your individual book choice?”; “Let’s do a scavenger hunt and find the hooks within our books.”;”Let’s add those hooks to our journals.”
Those that get done early… ask them to illustrate a scene from their book.
