Reading Investigations: Meet the Author Ted & Gloria Rand

Timeless picture books…
  • Today’s reading investigation: Meet the author/illustrator… Ted and Gloria Rand
  • Family Sharing: “What could these stories be about? *Invite everyone to share. Discuss which books you would choose.
  • Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons. Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
  • Next: “Let’s write 2-3 book predictions.” Allow everyone 10-15 minutes to put their thoughts on paper about 2-3 of the above titles. Remind them to write the title of the book, then a prediction about the book, as well as their reason for choosing that title. Encourage them to recreate the cover on their page. This is a great moment to check their spelling and their penmanship (proper letter formation including the ascenders and descenders placement). Inspire them to value their penmanship. When they put their thoughts on paper, it becomes an individual representation to an audience (reader). Their penning of their thoughts becomes the only representation of their personal connections, learning, and or creations. Ask them: “Are you satisfied with today’s writing? Could it be hung in a museum?”
  • Skill Discussion: “Let’s share what you’ve penned! Encourage everyone to share… including your youngest. Spend a few moments sharing how you made choices when you were their age.
  • Discussion Wrap-Up: “Which 4 or 5 titles should we request from FVRL for this week’s family story time?” You can choose to take a family “road trip” to Battle Grounds FVRL or you can check the titles out by using this FVRL link. Don’t forget to choose our Yacolt library for pick up.
