Why is literacy important?
Learners need literacy in order to engage with the written word in everyday life… Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively, and understand the issues that are shaping our world.
- Making the family connection: Discuss: “What do you know about geographical terms?”
- Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
- Today’s literary connection: Ask them to name the different geographical locations on the slide above. Ask them to locate the compass rose, “Why is it important to know how to use a compass rose any time you are needing directions?; “What are some examples of when you might need directions?” Ask them to draft a list of those times “in need” of directions. Remind them to include a compass rose.

- Bamoozle: https://www.baamboozle.com/game/61517 Not everyone learns at the same speed or with the same materials/resources. This geographical learning tool is the one that I find the most useful for the independent learners that need a visual representation.
