Literary Foundations: Independent Fall Readers

Are you an independent reader?
  • Making the family connection: Discuss: What does ‘reading to your selflook like for you?
  • Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons. Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
  • Today’s literary connection: subject. Guided inquiry: “As you read, do you…?” Discuss how a reader connects with their book of choice. Share the slide above. Share your personal connections while enjoying your book choice. Ask: “Do you read aloud in your mind?”; “Do you hear different voices for the characters?”; “Do you feel the same feelings the characters feel?”; “Can you hear, see, feel, smell the sensory clues in the story?”
  • Next: Gather any seasonal reads in your home (fall, winter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.). Create a book box/basket with all of your books gathered. Ask: “Which night a week should we choose as our “Family Book Club”? *This is a night where you have a book club evening (see the link below). Everyone has chosen a seasonal read for this night from the books you gathered. Everyone has read their book choice. Everyone comes to the family book club night with their book. Don’t forget the snacks and the seasonal book box/basket.
  • Family Book Club discussion: Encourage each person to share their favorite part, why they chose the book, as well as a rating for the book (1=didn’t like it – 5=liked it a lot).
  • Finally: Trade the books shared and/or invite them to choose a new book from the book box/basket for next week’s family book club.
