Math B4 Bed: Rounding Decimals

What do you notice?
  • B4 Bed Thoughts: *Let everyone see the image. Discuss: “What do you notice?”
  • Next: Ask: What do you not know?”
  • Next: Discuss which patterns are visible in the slide above. Ask: “Why is rounding a decimal important?” *Guided enquiry: Help them make the connection with rounding to nearest penny, especially when they are estimating at a grocery store.
  • Materials: pass out paper and pencils or have them use the back of their learning journals for math thoughts). *Remind them to use a new page, add today’s date, and a title for the learning image. *Encourage the younger family members to draw what they think the answer might be.
  • Show us…put your reasoning to the test: Ask: “What if you needed to double an apple crisp recipe, how would you know how many apples you would need?” or “In a grocery store, how would you round up the cost of each item to ensure you weren’t over spending your shopping budget? *Remind them about including a tax estimate! or “If you needed 35.5 inches of lumber for a project, how much lumber would you need to purchase from Lowe’s?”
  • Finally: Ask each member to share what they believe an equation and solution might be. Review what an active listener looks like.
