Kitchen Math: Spiced Thanksgiving Cookie Yum!

What do you notice?
  • Today’s kitchen math discussion: Shopping List. “What do you notice?”
  • Next Inquiry: “What don’t you know?”
  • Investigation: Materials: paper/pencils/colored pencils/crayons or family learning journals (back of journal). Remind them to turn to the next available page and date it. Ask them to write the name for today’s kitchen math.
  • Inquire: “How would you start planning to bake these turkey yums?”  “What if you don’t have all the ingredients in your pantry?”   “What if there was only one or two cookie cutters that could work for a thanksgiving theme?” *Let them have 5-6 minutes to draft their thoughts (without talking). When they are finished, have them share how they came to their conclusions.
  • Kitchen Lab: Discuss: “What steps should we take to discover if our reasoning is accurate?“ *Invite them to investigate their solutions: “Let’s investigate!” Once you’ve checked your pantry, ask someone to draft the cookie shopping list. Guide them in their estimation for each of the shopping list’s items. *Could it include a new cookie cutter?
