Inking Thoughts: Rainy-Day Memories

What could you create in your Journal today?
  • Family Sharing: Which of these rainy day explorations look promising for this weeks summertime adventure?” *Invite everyone to share.
  • Materials: family learning journals/paper, pencils, colored pencils, and/or crayons
  • Remind them to open their journals to the next available page and date it. Don’t forget to have them label the top of the page with today’s learning topic/skill.
  • Guided enquiry: “Summertime is the perfect season to enjoy adventures. Outdoor grilling and evening fire pits are memories we can enjoy. Story-telling creates those moments of silly giggles or “hold-your-breath” frights. For this week, let’s choose a rainy day adventure to get our summertime started!”
  • Next: Allow everyone 10-15 minutes to put their thoughts on paper. “What do they think a rainy day adventure might be about?”; “What might be the silliest part of the adventure?”; “What might be the scariest part of the adventure?
  • Skill Discussion: “Let’s share what you’ve penned! Encourage everyone to share… including your youngest. Spend a few moments sharing how you made choices when you were their age.
  • Road Trip Destination: Head down to Battle Ground for your Fort Vancouver Library discoveries, they have a great collection of comic books and joke books! You might check Literary Leftovers for any outdoor plant/birds/fish books not found at the library, I believe a used book store is always a great adventure!
  • Discussion Wrap-Up: Once you have settled in for the evening, have a family story time. “Which book should we experience tonight?”; When the book has been shared, ask: “Which picture was your favorite?”; “Which character came to life?”; “What part of the story will you remember or share with a friend?”; “What could you re-create in your journal?”
